Most first-print failures come from three things: a dirty build plate, a bad surface for the printer, and skipping calibration. None takes long to get right, and getting them right is the difference between an enjoyable first week and a machine that gets put away.
Where to put it
The printer needs a rigid, level surface that does not move. A CoreXY machine accelerates its gantry hard, and a bed-slinger throws its bed back and forth — both transfer force into whatever they stand on.
A wobbly table shows up as ringing or ghosting in the print surface. A solid desk or dedicated bench is worth arranging before the first print rather than after diagnosing artefacts.
Keep it out of draughts. An open window or air conditioning blowing across the bed causes warping and layer splitting, particularly on larger parts.
Build plate preparation
This is the most common cause of first-layer failure, and it is entirely avoidable.
- Wash the plate with dish soap and warm water before first use, then dry it fully. Plates ship with manufacturing residue.
- Handle it by the edges. Fingerprints leave oil, and oil prevents adhesion — this is the single most frequent beginner mistake.
- Re-wash when adhesion drops off. Isopropyl alcohol removes light oil; soap and water is better for accumulated grease.
Run the calibration
Let the machine complete its full calibration on first setup, and again after moving it. It takes several minutes and measures bed level, resonance and flow.
Skipping it to get printing sooner is a false economy — every subsequent print inherits the error.
Your first print
Use the model already on the machine or a supplied profile, in PLA, at default settings. The goal is confirming the machine works, not producing something impressive.
Watch the first layer. If it goes down cleanly and evenly, the rest usually follows. If it does not adhere, stop and fix the plate rather than hoping.
Removing the print
Let the plate cool before removing anything. Most parts release on their own as the plate contracts.
Flex the plate rather than levering with a blade — scraping damages the surface and shortens plate life considerably.
Before you change anything
Print several successful jobs at defaults before adjusting settings. The presets are well tuned, and changing multiple parameters at once makes it impossible to tell what caused an improvement or a regression.
When you do experiment, change one thing at a time.
